Stora Teatern

Storan, as the historic building is called among the locals in Gothenburg, was inaugurated in 1859 under the name of New Theatre, later changing to Stora Teatern in 1880. The building has been renovated over the years but the round salon remains in its original condition; Red velvet-covered chairs, crystal chandeliers and golden ornamentation. It is run by the City of Gothenburg's cultural administration.

The theatre welcomes both Swedish and international artists and a rich variety of performances, from new circuses (offering surrealistic, charming and poetic experiences) to world music concerts and philosophical conversations. For the latter, check out the podcast “Art as resistance”, a series of meetings with current artists who use their art consciously to change something in society.

In addition to the performances, you can find a perfect spot to meet before the performance: The Crystal Foyer. It offers both hot and chilled drinks and some snacks. During the summer, the large, sunny outdoor terrace is open. And for exciting culinary excursions during the rest of the year, you should visit the restaurant Teaterkällaren which offers selected ingredients and pure flavours in the basement of this majestic and historical building.
