Gothenburg Blues Festival

  • Villa Belparc 10 A O Elliots Väg Göteborg, Västra Götalands län, 413 11 Sweden (map)

The Gothenburg Blues Association organizes its annual festival, now for the seventeenth year in a row. This year, the Göteborg Blues Festival will be held on Friday 28 June and Saturday 29 June, again on two scenes at Villa Belparc, the oasis in Slottsskogen. A festival with romantic folk park feel: Sweden's most beautiful blues festival!

Larkin Poe called "Allman Brothers Small Sisters" has toured with Elvis Costello, Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst, among others. Rebecca and Megan Lovell are singer / songwriters who play several instruments and make their own version of 'roots rock'n'roll': soulful and colored by their heritage from the southern United States. They are originally from Atlanta but now live in Nashville. And is one of today's absolutely hottest bands, regardless of genre.

The electric guitar has a central role in today's blues music and this year's festival presents a number of internationally recognized musicians who prove this. Perhaps best known is Kid Ramos with a past at James Harman, Roomful of Blues, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Mannish Boys and others. Tonight on glowing solo guitar in the American 'super group' The Proven Ones.

Josh Smith, also from the United States, is an imaginative guitarist who, with impressive technology and lots of emotion, weaves the blues, soul, funk, r & b and even little jazz in their game. And JW-Jones from Canada has got his guitar play described as a mix of T-Bone Walker's chord game, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's sharp solos and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown's jazzy touch.

Ragtime Rumors is a quartet from the Netherlands that performs a mix of oldschool ragtime, Djangojazz and rootsblues with rock'n'roll attitude. Something that gave them first prize at the European Blues Challenge 2018. From Norway, Ronny Aagren & His Blues Gumbo with original music will be influenced by the American south. A mix of blues, country, southern rock, gospel-influenced country music and New Orleans rhythms.

We get a nice return visit from Denmark: Tim Lothar. A strong singer, engaging narrator, talented songwriter and also a driven guitarist. He skillfully weaves his strong original songs with classics made by bluesmen like Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton and Leadbelly.

The Swedish blues and soul scene is blessed with many talented singers. Johanna Hjort and Lollo Gardtman, for example, front Sweet Little Angels, a band that mixes jumpiga, jazzy song numbers with instrumental organ jazz. From Stockholm, Erika Baier & The Business comes with modern, heavy, curvy blues and soul. And Petra Odenman & Soul Exposure gives us soul with its own sound from a set list filled with older and newer songs from the world's soul treasure.

Finally: Roffe Wikström who doesn't really need a presentation. One of the great personalities in the Swedish blues thanks to the powerful voice, their own songs, the powerful guitar playing and the great scene presence.
