The stunning beauty of Delsjön

Delsjön is a large nature reserve, easily accessible from Gothenburg city center, that is perfect for short walks or to spend an entire day in. With its wild forest and magnificent lakes, there is a calm vibe but plenty to do for fun. Take my word for it – Delsjön is a must-see. You’ll know why when you do!

Precious gift

Situated in the eastern part of the city, this reserve is one of the few green sanctuaries around Gothenburg. It has an extraordinary value as it plays an important role in the mental and physical wellbeing of both locals and newcomers all year-round. No matter the season you visit, you’ll feel refreshed and renewed after experiencing any of outdoor activities it offers.

Choose your approach

The classic way (for me the best) to discover this massive nature reserve, as well as the hundreds of secret little spots around it, is walking around Stora and Lilla Delsjön. There are so many trails you can follow that you will never get bored of it..

The main paths are well marked and most of it is evenly surfaced. There are countless places to relax and enjoy the views while having a snack, drink coffee or even glögg (depending on the weather, right?). It can take you from 2 hours to the whole day, you decide!

In addition to the classic approach, in some winters the lakes can freeze and provide us with some of the most family-friendly activities such as ice skating or simply walking on the ice is an unusual experience. It is also an opportunity for brave souls to take a dip in the cold Swedish lakes! You will also find people cross-country skiing when conditions allow it.

It all changes and looks easier in spring and summer. The number of recreational activities that the lakes facilitate in these seasons are numerous. Have a swim at the popular beach Delsjöbadet or go to Västra Långvattnet and jump in the lake from surrounding rocks (please, be careful). Rent a canoe at Näsets Paddlarklubb or practise kayaking, frisbee golf, leisure fishing, mountain biking or horseback riding.

It’s also the perfect moment to go bird watching or to prepare a gorgeous barbecue with a bunch of friends in one of the many spots already prepared for it. There are even bins dotted about with fire wood – so you don’t need to rip branches of trees.

Keep an eye out for wildlife…

The area is also home to abundant wild flora and a fairly shy fauna. While I have seen many deer, it is said you can see wild boars, beavers and even moose but I’m still waiting!

A cave

Pitta, the protagonist of this anecdote, preferred to live in a cave than adapt to the modern environment that was offered in the early 20th century. Now you can squeeze in and have a closer look at this original piece of the History.

Natural springs

Clean and tasty water has flowed for 10,000 years at Kallebäck providing the whole city with a constant supply of drinking water. The first description of these springs goes back to the 17th century and navigates through history to these days.

Air defences and bunkers

“Near the Park and Nature Administration's cabins at Brudaremossen there are a couple of inconspicuous small mountains that hide a piece of fairly unknown history from the days of World War II.” This last bit goes for the most inquisitive minds.

Drink stop

Whatever you’re doing in Delsjön, the time will come when you want to take a seat, have a hot or cold drink and snack on some food.

There are two cafés found in the area: Kaffestugan Lyckan and Bertilssons Stuga. Lyckan can be found by Stora Delsjön between the car park and large grass bank. Bertilssons is a long (but very beautiful) walk away at the far end of the lake. Of the two, my personal preference is the classically Swedish, red wooden cottage, Bertilssons Stuga.

It’s really close!

The Delsjö area is much closer to the centre of Gothenburg than you can imagine. The whole journey takes about 25 minutes, yet it feels like it's worlds away. From town, take the number 5 tram toward Ostra Sjukhuset and get off at the Topelsgatan stop. Cross over the tracks and head up the hill. It's a 15-minute walk and if you’re lucky to be in the right season, liven this walk-up by picking some of the wild raspberries that you get to find. There is also a large car park If you prefer this option.

If you love yourself, it’s a must

In conclusion, whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter, there is always a common factor… the outstanding and magical look of this nature reserve will recharge your batteries in the blink of an eye! Connect with nature. Breathe deep. Feel good :)
