The best cafes in Gothenburg
Choosing the best cafes in Gothenburg is not easy! There is a vibrant coffee scene here, where hearty independent coffee shops have seen off the big international chains. Here are my top tips for cafes to visit in Gothenburg, each with their own character:
Bar Centro
Bar Centro is a hole in the wall restaurant by night and coffee shop-come-alley during the day. The limited seating inside is supplemented with stools in the alley next-door and street tables in the spring and summer. It has a pretty unique atmosphere compared to other cafes in Gothenburg. And I've often noticed a southern European clientele at Bar Centro: people who appreciate good coffee!
da Matteo
You won't see an article about cafes in Gothenburg that doesn't mention da Matteo. The quality of coffee is evident at all four locations Vallgatan, Magasinsgatan, Victoriapassagen and Sprängkullsgatan and Lindholmen. The baristas know their blends and they roast coffee on-site.
It does really good food too, with delicious home baked good and tasty salads. It’s slightly more expensive than most cafes, but the quality can’t be questioned. The courtyard at da Matteo's on Magasingatan basks in the sun most of the year and is often filled with happy customers getting some vitamin D with their fika.
Kaffe Kid
Kaffe Kid is a chill spot that’s way more than just a standard cafe. It has a vibe where you can hunker down with your laptop, catch a live acoustic set, see some local artwork, improv comedy, or just grab a good coffee and a treat. Dogs welcome. Gbg-roasted beans. De-caff, gluten-free and vegan options. Everyone is covered at this lovely neighbourhood hangout.
Bar Kastello
Laid-back, unpretentious but serious about their coffee. Offering everything from Gbg-roasted beans to nitro brew – alongside straightforward stuff like avocado toast and fresh croissants. It’s dog-friendly, usually has a solid playlist going, and is a good spot for a quiet early evening beer.
Mariki Cafe
Mariki is a warm, South American-inspired oasis that brings a splash of Latin flavour to Gamlestaden. The menu is packed with authentic arepas, empanadas, and "schoolhouse chic" vibes. Laptop-friendly but you can also expect events like a yoga-brunch, quiz, and clothes swap. Relax with some tunes, and a fika or beer.
A43 Coffee
This is a cafe that takes coffee seriously. So it’s my tip for coffee geeks who want to talk to their barista, In fact, if you’re not a coffee geek (yet) you can book yourself onto a coffee tasting course and learn a thing or two! Great coffee, sourced from local micro-roasters this cafe on Avenyn has a small number of outdoor tables.
Kaffelabbet
Following on from A43, this is another for the coffee geeks to check out. While you can order a coffee here, Kaffelabbet (“The Coffee Lab”) also sells beans, machines, accessories and offers courses. Honestly, if you can’t get a good cup of coffee here, well, something has gone seriously wrong!
Viktor’s Kaffe
This is a trendy cafe in Gothenburg that has a friendly vibe. Found on Geijersgatan, just off Avenyn, it has been serving great coffee amidst stylish music, art and interior design since 2012. In fact, when I go here, I’m likely to leave with at least one new song for my playlist! It’s a got a lovely, local neighbourhood feel. A good place to chill, any time of the year.
