Coffee in Gothenburg
Gothenburg has a vibrant coffee scene where hearty independents have, to a large extent, seen off the big international chains. Some local establishments such as da Matteo have boomed in recent years. There are also great independent cafes with standards to please even the hippest of coffee snobs. Coffee in these places holds its own against any of the world's coffee Meccas with an accent more Rome than Melbourne. Indeed, there is a strong Italian influence to be found; less flat white with smashed avo, more long black Swedish fika vibes.
Whether it is filter, short, soy, cap, latte or drip these cafes are sure to satisfy your coffee needs.
You won't see an article about coffee in Gothenburg that doesn't mention da Matteo. The quality is evident at all four locations Vallgatan, Magasinsgatan, Victoriapassagen and Sprängkullsgatan.
da Matteo's is a good benchmark of the coffee experience in Gothenburg. Wood, record player sounds, warmth, home baked treats and baristas who know their blends and roast coffee on-site. The courtyard at da Matteo's Magasingatan cafe basks in the sun most of the year and is often filled with happy customers getting some vitamin D with their fika.
The last few years have seen a number of great little spots pop-up for coffee and people watching. Bar Centro is a hole in the wall restaurant by night and coffee shop-come-alley during the day. The limited seating inside is supplemented with stools in the alley next-door and street tables in the spring and summer. The staff are very friendly and I've often noticed a southern european clientele at Bar Centro: people who appreciate good coffee!
JOS does great salads, juices and fika alongside good coffee. The atmosphere is fresh and light with a hint of Californian lifestyle inspiration.
Linné and Haga
A cafe bar with character and coffee that massively surpasses its size, Doppio, is easily missed as you stroll up Linnégatan (just before Fjärde Långgatan). This small espresso bar serves great coffee and homemade style pastries.
Kastello on Landsvägsgatan is, walking from Järntorget and running parallel to Linnégatan, just up the road from Kaffe Labbet. Kastello and Kaffe Labbet (The Coffee Lab) both serve great coffee, the later more focused on coffee equipment. Red blooded Bar Italia towards Masthugget serves arguably the best Italian style coffee in town.
Viktor’s Kaffe on Geijersgatan, just off Avenyn, has been serving great coffee amidst stylish music, art and interior design since 2012. Mahogny Coffee Bar has two cafes. The one near Korsvägen is smaller but both do great coffee and croissants.
