Beer in Gothenburg
It appears a city can’t be considered “cool” nowadays without a craft beer scene. Well, you can put a big tick in Gothenburg’s box as this is a city that takes its beer seriously! There are some superb pubs in Gothenburg where staff can tell you about the beer and make recommendations. These are places where beer is a religion and the pubs its church. So anyone interested in beer tasting in Gothenburg should definitely wet their lips at one of these quality pubs.
Ölrepublican – situated next to Kronhus, Gothenburg’s oldest building, Ölrepublican is one of my favourite pubs in the city. The food is very good but the beer, oh the beer, is amazing. Select your next drink from a menu on the table or browse the chalkboard behind the bar. There must be well over a 100 beers to choose from and nearly 30 taps. My personal favourite is a Swedish brew, Bedarö Bitter.
The Rover – found on Andra Långgatan, the Rover will please any beer aficionado with 32 taps to try beers from Europe and the US. The burgers here are great (trust me) and it has a relaxed feel thanks to quieter music and less crowding compared to some of its neighbours. The prices of some beers are eye-wateringly expensive – you’ll be amazed at how much beer can cost – but there are plenty of more affordable beers that I imagine 99% of customers order!
Brewers Bar – located round the corner from The Rover on Tredje Långgatan, Brewers Bar is fairly new to Gothenburg. In fact, most of the restaurants and bars on this street are new but they all share the same thing: quality. Here you can order 0.2 l taster glasses to sample a variety of the 14 taps available. There range of sourdough pizzas includes several vegan options. Be prepared to stand and share a table with others which, personally, I this is a plus-point.
Tre Små Rum – a basement venue in Vasastan it has outside seating to accompany its three small interior rooms (hence the name!). With 18 taps and fridges full of bottles, the chilled atmosphere and low-key background music make this a great place to meet friends for a good old chat. They even brew small amounts of their own beer on site.
Hops – found at Masthuggstorget, right next to Andra Långgatan, Hops has 13 beers on tap and an extensive list of bottled and canned beer. The locally brewed Sitting Bulldog with its hoppy flavour is a favourite of mine. The food comes recommend, though I haven’t tried it myself. On a sunny day, the outdoor seating is ideal for soaking up some vitamin D and quenching your thirst!
Haket – this cosy pub has a traditional, dark wood interior and outside seating that gets plenty of sun. Located 2 mins walk from Hops, what it lacks in the number of taps compared to other pubs on this list, it more than makes up for it with an array of bottled beer from Sweden, Europe and the US. You can enjoy live sports here while supping on a local brew.
Brewdog – Brewdog is a Scottish brewer that opened up pubs in many of the UK’s cities. The Gothenburg pub was (I think) the first to open outside the UK. The beer selection is seriously good, featuring 20-or-so taps of Brewdog beer along with plenty of good Swedish and American beers. I like the small touch of beer tap handles being used in the bathroom sinks; sometimes it’s the small things!
Given Gothenburg’s size and superb public transport you could comfortably cover all these venues in one night. In fact, as you’ll see from the map below, it’s even walkable. You will be paying a little more for some of the beers and, if you just want a standard lager or stor stark (“big strong”) as they’re known in Sweden, perhaps you can skip these places and save yourself a few kronar. But if you want to taste the best of beer in Gothenburg and be served by passionate and knowledgeable staff: you know where to go!
